  17. <p>     The specter of a national treasure in foreign hands haunted
  18. the French last week as Swiss food conglomerate Nestle unwrapped
  19. a hostile bid to take over Source Perrier, France's bottled-water
  20. king and a company once deemed financially invulnerable. It was
  21. no solace that Italy's Agnelli group, which is bent on
  22. diversifying beyond automaker Fiat, was competing with Nestle
  23. for the rights to sell the famous little green bottles all over
  24. the world.

  26. <p>     The complicated maneuvering around Perrier, which now
  27. involves about a dozen European food and drink manufacturers,
  28. investment firms and banks, may be the opening gambit of a
  29. Continent-wide scramble in which European and American companies
  30. will grab for the biggest possible portions in the
  31. soon-to-be-restructured European trading community. Friends have
  32. quoted Giovanni Agnelli, elder statesman of the Turin clan, as
  33. saying, "I really won't be satisfied until I have a Nestle." As
  34. the stakes get higher in Europe's food industry, the ultimate
  35. question may become who eats whom first.
